Short answer: Squadron 42 is the single-player game; Star Citizen is the online universe. The referral code and its 50,000 UEC bonus are tied to Star Citizen Game Packages, not to buying Squadron 42 on its own.
Squadron 42 (S42) and Star Citizen share an RSI account and a universe, but they are separate products. That trips people up around the referral program, so here is the clean version.
Two products, one account
Star Citizen is the persistent multiplayer alpha you can play now (currently Alpha 4.8). Squadron 42 is a story-driven single-player campaign with no firm release date as of 2 June 2026. They use the same RSI login, but they are bought separately.
How the referral code fits
The referral 50,000 UEC triggers on a Star Citizen Game Package purchase of $40 USD+. Buying Squadron 42 by itself is not a Game Package, so it does not trigger the bonus. If you buy a bundle that includes a Star Citizen Game Package, that does qualify. The safe path is to get a Starter Pack with STAR-JTV7-FXLR attached, then add Squadron 42 later if you want it.
Should a new player buy S42 now?
If you mainly want the online universe, you do not need S42. Start with the cheapest Star Citizen Starter Pack, take the 50,000 UEC, and decide on Squadron 42 closer to its release. Is it worth it?
