- The alpha is live now. The Persistent Universe (the multiplayer game) is playable today on the current build, Alpha 4.8. This is not a beta sign-up or a wait-list, you can play it.
- No confirmed 1.0 date. Star Citizen is crowdfunded and developed in the open, with no official full-release date. Anyone quoting a hard "release year" is guessing.

So should you wait for release?
No real reason to. The alpha already offers flying, trading, mining, salvage, bounty hunting and more, and it improves on a roughly bi-monthly patch cycle.
